Many of us fear what we don’t know. I know that the thought of fixing my leaking faucet scared me to death. I could already picture the disaster in which the house was under four feet of water and I could see the rubber ducky floating by as I broke down into sobs in the corner. This is quite laughable to a plumber, but I’m not a plumber. I’m a web designer. And I’m willing to bet the thought of understanding websites makes you break down into sobs in the corner.
When I had to fix my faucet, I consulted a Fix-it-Yourself manual in an effort to save money. Yes, I could call a plumber, but if I don’t even understand what he does, that puts me at a disadvantage. He could rip me off or make things even worse and I wouldn’t know any better. So, I figured I’d take a shot at fixing it myself and if nothing else, I’d have a basic idea of what needed to be done, so if I did need to call the plumber, I could talk somewhat intelligently about a couple things. This gives me more confidence and I don’t feel left “at the mercy of others.”
When it’s time to create a website for your small business, you’ll feel a whole lot more comfortable if you have an idea about what’s going on. Not only do you decrease the chances of getting “taken” by someone who wants to talk you into things you don’t need, but you can also be hands on in knowing how well your site is doing. When I get my car fixed, if I can drive it properly afterwards, I know the mechanics did right by me. If your website is up and running and you’re able to track how well it’s doing, know where people are visiting you from, what your traffic is, etc., then you can know if your webmaster is working out for you. If you’re unable to understand or track your success, you may be just pouring money down the drain.
The purpose of this blog is not to teach you how to build a website, but to understand details about it that help make your business and your site successful. The more you know, the better prepared you are, the better your site will work out for your needs. We all can’t know everything and there are certain things we leave to those trained for them. That’s what professionals are for.
There’s no need to fear websites. Over time, you’ll see that it all really makes perfect (well, maybe not perfect) sense. Understanding the basics gives you so much more power over your business and your success. And that’s the way it should be. With YOU in the driver’s seat.

Hi Do,
I love the way you simplified the process of understanding the big wide internet. I wish your blog was around when I was learning the internet. There are a lot of information out there but very few come down the beginner’s level.
Well done Do.
Regards.
Sam
