To have a website, you need a domain name. A domain name is www.yoursite.com - literally the address people type in to visit your site. A domain name should include keywords for your business. As an example, www.JDandCompany.com isn’t useful as it doesn’t say anything about what they do. A better option would be www.JDRealEstate.com. Search engines look for keywords in many places throughout your site, starting with your domain name. The better your domain name, the better your search engine rankings will be. It’s the first step. A domain name should ALWAYS include important words relating to your business. This site focuses on small business websites and that’s in its domain name, www.SmallBusinessWebsitesGuide.com. It’s lengthier than I had hoped, but includes all of the important keywords.
The other thing to keep in mind is choosing a domain name that’s easy to remember as well as not being too long if possible. However, with thousands upon thousands of domain names snatched up each day, the choices are getting slimmer all the time. It’s hard to remember www.SmithRanchInvestmentPropertiesColorado.com, plus, your email gets long too. For example, it could be info@SmithRanchnvestmentPropertiesColorado.com which gets unwieldy to type in and increases the chance of errors. Try cutting it down to the necessities, like www.RanchPropertiesColorado.com as an example.
A good domain name isn’t chosen without any thought, but by sitting down and identifying not only what your company does, but by what words people will search for to find you. This step can increase your business success immensely.
