To have a website, you need a domain name. A domain name is www.yoursite.com - literally the address people type in to visit your site. A domain name should include keywords for your business. As an example, www.JDandCompany.com isn’t useful as it doesn’t say anything about what they do. A better option would be www.JDRealEstate.com. Search engines look for keywords in many places throughout your site, starting with your domain name. The better your domain name, the better your search engine rankings will be. It’s the first step. A domain name should ALWAYS include important words relating to your business. This site focuses on small business websites and that’s in its domain name, www.SmallBusinessWebsitesGuide.com. It’s lengthier than I had hoped, but includes all of the important keywords.

Many of us fear what we don’t know. I know that the thought of fixing my leaking faucet scared me to death. I could already picture the disaster in which the house was under four feet of water and I could see the rubber ducky floating by as I broke down into sobs in the corner. This is quite laughable to a plumber, but I’m not a plumber. I’m a web designer. And I’m willing to bet the thought of understanding websites makes you break down into sobs in the corner.
